Produced by the Matlatzinca family in San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca, El Guel is an artisanal Espadín mezcal made from fully mature Agave angustifolia plants, some aged up to eight years. Hearts are roasted for 20 days in earthen pits over mesquite wood, imparting signature smoky complexity, then crushed on a stone tahona wheel and fermented in open wooden vats with wild yeasts. Distillation takes place in small copper stills, yielding a smooth, medium-bodied spirit with notes of roasted agave, thyme and charcoal. Bottled at 46% ABV, El Guel showcases the terroir of the Sierra Madre del Sur and traditional mezcalero craftsmanship.
